Live from 2008 performance Gounod was born in Paris, the son of a pianist mother and a draftsman father. His mother was his first piano teacher. Under her tutelage, Gounod first showed his musical talents. He entered the Paris Conservatoire where he studied under Fromental Halévy. He won the Prix de Rome in 1839 for his cantata Ferdinand. He subsequently went to Italy where he studied the music of Palestrina. He concentrated on religious music of the sixteenth century. Gounod eventually returned to Paris and composed the "Messe Solennelle", also known as the "Saint Cecilia Mass". This work was first performed in London during 1851 and began his reputation as a noteworthy composer. He wrote two symphonies in 1855. His Symphony No.1 in D major was the inspiration for Georges Bizets (who was then Gounods 17 year old student) Symphony No. 1 in C, composed later that same year. Despite their charm and brilliance, Gounods symphonies are seldom performed. One of the few recordings of the symphonies was a CD made by Sir Neville Mariner with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields for Philips Records. Gounod wrote his first opera, Sapho, in 1851, but had no great success until Faust (1859), based on the play by Goethe. This remains his best-known work. The romantic and highly melodious Roméo et Juliette (based on the Shakespeare play), premiered in 1867, is also performed and recorded regularly. The charming and highly individual Mireille of 1864 is admired by connoisseurs. There is some controversy surrounding "Faust". Many critics believed it was a far advancement over Gounods prior works. One critic stated his doubt that Gounod composed it, which prompted Gounod to challenge the critic to a duel. The critic withdrew his statement.[citation needed] From 1870 to 1875 Gounod lived in England, becoming the first conductor of what is now the Royal Choral Society. Much of Gounods music from this time is vocal or choral in nature. Later in his life, Gounod returned to his early religious impulses, writing much religious music, including a musical setting of Ave Maria based on the first prelude from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier (BWV 846) by J.S. Bach and Hymnus Pontificius the anthem of Vatican. In fact, he died as he put the finishing touches to a requiem "Le Grand Requiem" inspired by the death of his grandson, a major work which he was never to hear performed. Gounod died in 1893 in Saint-Cloud, France.

Mi chiamo Cecilia Lulli e ho 24 anni. Sono nata a Palestrina in provincia di Roma il 30 luglio 1984, ma ho sempre vissuto a Milano, dove ho frequentato il liceo classico Berchet. Nel 2006 ho fatto un secondo stage al Giornale di Vimercate, un settimanale locale con una tiratura media di 13mila copie. È stata unesperienza utile per capire come lavora un giornalista di cronaca e allo stesso tempo per imparare a trovare informazioni in una zona che conoscevo poco. Il terzo stage è stato alla redazione milanese del Giornale, dove mi sono impratichita con il lavoro di desk e il sistema editoriale. Dopo aver vissuto due mesi negli Stati Uniti, sono riuscita ad entrare alla scuola di giornalismo della Cattolica. Di recente ho ripreso i contatti con il Giornale, con il quale tuttora collaboro e dove ho fatto un secondo stage nel 2008. Mi piace lavorare in cronaca, perché mi fa conoscere aspetti nuovi del mondo in cui vivo, ma anche in cultura e spettacoli libri e teatro, pur essendo frutto della fantasia dellautore, possono rivelare volti inaspettati della realtà. I feel them, lifting me, On Wings of Desire. © 2007 currier/piazza music Spiritual author Stuart Wilde was the first to recognize the special quality of Cecilias voice when he met her after one of his seminars. Later that evening she "wowed everyone" when she stood on a table and sang "Amazing Grace" a cappella. Wilde generously organized her first recording, "Voice of the Feminine Spirit" and included her on his tour of Australia with several other "collective conscious" authors, including Louise Hay, Marianne Williamson, Dr. Deepak Chopra and Dr. Wayne Dyer. I met Cecilia in 1995. She contacted me while on tour with Stuart. She had bought a copy of "New York Nights" an album I had written and produced for Sean McDermott. He was touring Australia at the same time, co-starring with Marina Prior in a lavish production of "West Side Story." Cecilia bought "New York Nights" at the theater after seeing the show. She returned a second night and went back stage to meet Sean. She introduced herself by saying, "Hi, Im Cecilia from Norway" and Ive sold over 5,000 albums in the last 4 weeks." She gave him her CD and asked if he would give it to his producer... me. When I first listened to "Voice of the Feminine Spirit," I was struck by Cecilias unique sound like Enya, Celine Dion or Sarah Brightman. We began writing one another and a few months later I got a call "Hi, Its Cecilia Im in New York and in front of your building." She came up. I had discovered a "soul-mate". The album continues to be one of my favorites. I "made" this song "Wings of Desire" with my friend Jim Piazza a few years later and after the untimely death of my "life partner", Dr. (Saint Peter) Brothers. Peter and Cecilia had met several times when she was either visiting or working in New York City and they really liked one another. He was very sick when she brought two healers by on one of her visits to the City. Their names were Margaret and Peter and as a team, had co-authored books, they gave seminars and were on lecture circuits. Apparently, very credible for folks in that business. My clearest memory was that Margaret, who was, "The Medium", after drinking a lot of red wine, went into a trance... Peter practiced Family Medicine. He had "little faith" and "no experience" with folks who "channeled" for a living. When her "spirit guide" took over, she began to talk like a sailor. I remember thinking her "guide" was one crusty old geezer! "A little spooky" but I remember we all had a really good evening. Cecilia genuinely wanted "to heal" Peter by bringing these folks by. I felt comforted by her "Complete Faith". She became my (Saint Cecilia) that night. Whatever transpired, Peter seemed to have fun and we went to bed feeling hopeful. He died a few months later... forever my "Saint Peter". I dont claim to have a "spirit guide" but I didnt really write "Wings of Desire" either... it came through me. After Peters death, I went looking for Angels! I began my search by re-reading The Holy Bible, and then discovered H.P. Blavatsky, The Esoteric Tradition (Ancient Wisdom of The Secret Doctrine), Theosophy and the lessons of Kabbalah. I was completely inspired after seeing the 1987 film "Der Himmel über Berlin / Wings of Desire" by the German director Wim Wenders. Set in the late 1980s, toward the end of the Cold War, it follows two Angels, Damiel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto Sander), as they roam the city, unseen and unheard by the people, observing and listening to their diverse thoughts. A subplot of the film follows Peter Falk, cast as himself, who has arrived in Berlin to make a film about Berlins Nazi past. As the movie progresses, it turns out that Peter Falk was also once an Angel, who renounced his immortality to become a mortal participant in the world after he grew tired of always observing and never experiencing. The films title and Peters death were inspiration for the song. Cecilia was kind to demo the song some years later while staying with me. By special request, I upload this lovely Smith rendition, one of his very first recordings. Jack Smith (31 May 1898, The Bronx, New York City -- 13 May 1950, New York City) was known as "Whispering" Jack Smith and was a popular baritone singer in the 1920s and 1930s who made a brief come-back in the early 1940s. He was a popular radio and recording artist who occasionally appeared in films. Smith was born John Schmidt. He died of a heart attack at the age of 51. He had a very distinctive style which was a combination of singing and talking in a very "intimate" way using the microphone very effectively as opposed to "belting" the song out. His "whispering" style of singing was a result of a World War I injury from poison gas that kept him from singing at full volume. He made the "whispering" style popular, and there were a number of imitators. Smith took to the relatively newly invented microphone, and it was singers like "Whispering" Jack Smith and the early "crooners" who developed the use of this more modern technology. Smith began his professional career in 1915, when he sang with a quartet at a theater in the Bronx. After service in World War I, he got a job in 1918 as a "song plugger" for the Irving Berlin Music Publishing Company. He was a pianist at a radio station when he got his singing break substituting for a singer who failed to show up. Smith was exclusively on the radio, but beginning in 1925, he began making records. He also started performing on-stage on the vaudeville circuit. In 1927, Jack Smith was touring England, performing with the Blue Skies Theater Company singing tunes such as "Manhattan" by Rogers and Hart and songs by Gershwin, when he was suddenly replaced by a new all girl singing trio, the Hamilton Sisters & Fordyce. Smith returned to New York and eventually went to work for NBC Radio. Jack Smiths diction was so very clear and perfect that the audience could hear his remarkable projection of every word in the very back of the room. Boisterous London audiences, many times including the Prince of Wales and his entourage, would be brought to a complete hush during his performance. Those fortunate enough to have attended Smiths shows, attest that he was unsurpassed and unrivaled, when performing, in an intimate venue of perhaps 250 persons. His smooth vocalizing, complete with the rolled Rs had a most appealing quality, even suggesting a bit of mystery. While his performances invariably met with high acclaim, a darker side of him (off-stage) began to emerge. When he was not performing, he was an extremely melancholy individual who became more and more dependent on alcohol. After 1931, Jack Smiths career faded into obscurity and in 1940 he attempted a comeback but it was unsuccessful. That same year he recorded four sides for Decca. These would be his last commercial recordings. As for this brilliant recording (of which the full title is Cecilia, Does Your Mother Know Youre Out?), displaying all qualities that would be his trademark, it was made for Victor on September 21st, 1925. Mr. Smith himself is as well interpreting the piano accompaniment.

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO; 1995 Pablo Elvira, 1937-2000 Born on Sept. 24, 1937. A gifted musician, native of San Juan, Puerto Rico and the son of a dance orchestra leader, Elvira began his musical career playing jazz trumpet (after playing piano, alto sax and bass fiddle!) with his fathers group and later formed his own orchestra. A meeting with the famous cellist, composer and conductor Pablo Casals led to his pursuing a career as an opera singer. In 1960 Casals finished work on a biblical oratorio for world peace, El Pesebre, one of the cellists small body of compositions. Needing five soloists for a recording and tour of the work, Casals heard Mr. Elvira audition and asked him to sing the baritone part. One of Mr. Elviras most memorable performances of El Pesebre came in 1969, when Casals, by then 92, conducted it in Jerusalem before an audience of 3,000. In 1966, he participated in the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in New York and was selected by the Dean of the Indiana University School of Music to join their voice faculty. He remained there for eight years and performed leading baritone roles in the opera schools productions. Elvíra maintained his primary residence in Bozeman, Montana, and he became known as a strong supporter of opera in that state. After a year spent performing in Europe, he returned briefly to Indiana before moving to New York and debuting with New York Citys Metropolitan Opera in 1978, becoming one of the leading baritones and performed there over 100 times during the next 12 years. In 1974, he made his first appearance with the New York City Opera. He performed with such opera greats as Joan Sutherland, Beverly Sills, Renata Scotto, Roberta Peters, Marilyn Horne, Cecilia Bartoli, Carlo Bergonzi, Justino Diaz, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo, who stated Elvira was "By far the greatest baritone in the world." During his career, Elvira sang in France, Germany, South America, Australia, Puerto Rico, Israel and throughout the United States. Among others, he received honors and distinctions like the "Israel Medal", Honor Awards by the US Government, Honors in New York from Governor Mario Cuomo and Mayor Ed Koch. He was the first baritone singing in the opening of the Michigan Opera Theater, as well as the openings of Chang Kai Shek Memorial Theater in Taiwan and the Melbourne Australia Performing Arts Center. In 1967-68 he sang in the world --premiere of Jerome Hines opera "I am the Way", first in Indianapolis and reprising it at the MET. In 1972 he sang the title role in the world premiere of John Eatons opera Heracles, which inaugurated Indiana Universitys 1,460-seat Musical Arts Center. Among his vast repertoire, his signature role was Figaro in Rossinis"Il Barbiere di Siviglia" (The Barber of Seville) and critics and colleagues alike crowned him "The best Figaro" of his generation. His musicality, solid technique, breathing control (which he developed by many years of trumpet playing) and seamless legato; along with his great acting skills, sets him apart and creates a real admiration from his colleagues, as Jerome Hines documented in his book "Great Singers on Great Singing". Pablo Elvira died in 2000 at 62. The musician, artist, singer and above all great human being is greatly missed.
