Great Fun from the Toronto International Film Festival 2005 Ottar Thor is the star player of the Icelandic football team KR (Reykjavík FC). He is a well liked player who causes a stir when he admits being gay to his team mates and then goes on a journey to discover himself (with the help of the local press). He soon finds himself on the bench for most of his teams matches and decides to call it quits with KR. Its the 1950s. Under President Eisenhowers administration, everyone has a house in the suburbs, a decent job, a gas-guzzling car, and a basic "Leave It to Beaver" lifestyle. Not so, said Hubert Selby, in his novel, LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN. For a good deal of the working class, times were still tough. Preyed upon by crime, toyed with by factory owners and unions, and, ultimately, shackled by their own ignorance, the working class had their promise of a white picket fence and primrose garden vacated. In Brooklyn, particularly, things were acutely tough. Manufacturing jobs were on a rapid decline, as companies moved out of town or out of state (which was why those companies remaining in Brooklyn were able to mess with their employees take it or leave it, was their attitude). At the same time, an influx of immigrants seeking jobs made the hunt for work even more competitive--another bonus for the remaining factory owners. Slums rapidly worsened, so much so that Dodger owner Walter Alston decided his teams future was in jeopardy. L.A. looked like a much safer place for a stadium. But neither Selby nor director Uli Edel portrayed this working class as merely innocent victims. Neither the book nor the film is a didactic rant about class warfare. The poor had their own vices of greed, brutality, and dissipation. Just about every other scene has someone going through someone elses wallets, union funds or pockets. If they arent doing that, theyre drinking, fighting, or whoring. Its a pretty dismal world. The natural response to this film might be "Wait a minute. Not everyone working class Johnny-Punchclock guy was a criminal. Most people worked hard and honestly." Of course, this is true but its not the films concern. This is a study of those who were trapped in that world, and this study is compelling and horrifying. Uli Edel has perfectly captured this bleak world, either bathing everything in a garish light or obscuring it in heavy shadows. The performances are brilliant. Theres no understating Jennifer Jason Leighs gritty and powerful performance. Also keep an eye out for a cameo by Hubert Selby as the driver who hits Georgette. Not for the weak-stomached and definitely not for kids, LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN is as cinematographically close to the innermost circle of urban hell as you can get. Director Uli Edel. This movie is totally lighthearted and non-stop funny with adorable guys, silly satire and music. A take-off on the teen genre but totally wink-wink and sweet. I wasnt crazy about the Nambla joke but this movie totally has its heart in the right place. After all, dont gay teens deserve the same coming-of-age movie that straight teens do? Sure, its not for the weak of heart or the religious fundamentalist, but who cares? Its good, dirty fun about love, kotu, desire and friendship. Sure, its a fantasy world with understanding parents, hot teachers, no homophobia and true love but that was my favorite thing about the movie. Also loved the cameos from Graham Norton, Richard Hatch, Scott Thompson, and many others. I shall never look at Graham Norton the same way. See this movie, its totally great... Alex Dimitriades is stunning as a nihilistic young Greek-Australian on a wild binge. This talented actor pretty much carries the film on his broad shoulders, having totally immersed himself into the antiheros persona. Dimitriades leaves no stone unturned in responding to Director Ana Kokkinos explicit direction. One may feel revelation or revulsion, but one cannot easily dismiss the impact of Kokkinos graphic images and depictions. How one values this film will depend on personal taste. At the foreign film series in which I saw it, the audience was completely drawn into the drama, responding to subtle lines, and one could feel the deep involvement of all the viewers. Jill Belcocks sharp editing and Nikki DiFalcos atmospheric production design certainly enhanced the proeedings. At times one felt ones sensibilities being assaulted under the sheer impact of the presentation. The value of the film from a personal perspective is a quite realistic slice-of-life consideration of a quintessential "looser," and being able to identify (if not fully sympathize) with his alien plight. It is also an informative dramatization of a subculture which has become quite ingrown in its attitudes and customs. Its community has become so exclusive that its larger Australian setting becomes of secondary importance. Dimitriades brilliantly depicts the contradictions and confusions of his character, depleted of creative energy by physical and emotional abuses. It is a performance of enormous courage and conviction, which becomes almost hypnotic as the film progresses. "Loosers" are not normally satisfying subjects for dramatizations, especially characters who fail to grow, and who in the end are little or no different from the way they were in the beginning. It is therefore all the more commendable that Kokkinos fine cast manages to involve the viewer in an endless series of unforgettable images and scenes, creating a powerful mosaic of lasting impact. With Hanks, who is always watchable, and Washington, who has also got a very good track record, this film was destined to be fantastic but not even I, who always has an optimistic view when it comes to movies, was ready for the impact that this film made. Tom Hanks excelled even himself with his performance as an AIDS striken homokotuual who is fired from his job simply because of his condition. It is Hanks, by himself, who makes the whole scenario in the film believable. Although this is Hankss best performance of his career, he is very closely followed by Denzel Washington who gives a perfect performance as the only lawyer who will take on the case although he is a homophobe himself. The emotional strain of the film on the audience is immense and in the later stages of the film it is almost impossible to watch because of that. The make-up which gives the impression that Hanks really does have the terrible disease is perfect and the simple yet striking direction from Jonathan Demme(The Silence Of The Lambs) make this utterly compelling viewing although at times it is very uncomfortable. All praise to everyone in the making of this beautiful film. Here is a film that lives up to the expectations of a very funny trailer. Its an oddball comedy, and its dark, and its funny, and its touching, and it will charm the pants off many in the audience. Here is a simple story in which our lovely contestant and her family try to find their way to California so that she can prove to the world she is not a loser! The premise itself can lead to years of therapy for a family that should get a group rate in psychiatric care. Expert editing and superb comedic performances from all the principals involved will have many overlook the fact that the plot line is a little too contrived at times. The set pieces will have the audience howling with laughter as we see different characters trying to overcome some pretty irreverent obstacles. The scene at the gas station contains moments of deep sadness and offbeat humor, something that Carrell pulls off wonderfully, and none will be able to look at the trunk of a car, some dubious literary material, and highway patrol the same way after seeing the infamous scene in the film. The best is of course, saved for last, and by this time we are waiting for something outrageous which "Little Miss Sunshine" delivers unapologetically. A classic track will probably be recharged for a new generation, as the bonds of family precariously balance a moment that could be as tacky as they come. "Sunshine" is one of the best things to come out of American cinema this year, an original film that relies on a script that understands the differences between generations in the same family. It doesnt explain why each character is as quirky as can be, and it doesnt build much background because it is not needed to make the film work. Kinnear, Colette, Abigail, Arkin, and Correll are a fine team and keep the films feel fresh throughout the film. Here is a family that has no special qualities or powers, a family that will make us rejoice that creativity is still alive in Hollywood, a film that will provide us with plenty of much needed sunshine in an otherwise pretty dull summer.

This film reminds us of "ayip and the City", but with the city being Russias capital. Showing us a very stylized Moscow (as "" does with New York), the movie spotlights the private lives of 3 main characters in a modern take of now "liberal" Russia. Two of them have glamorous lives and careers, affording us viewers locations (luxury apartments, offices, bars, and so on) to match; a global, thoroughly Westernized side of Moscow we rarely see on film. The third character is from the Asian part of Russia, throwing in some gritty reminders about how others, especially racial minorities, live in Russia. This characters family, predictably, is more conservative and closed minded than the other more "European" characters. This character and his family also remind the audience of Russias multi cultural nature. Minor characters inter related to the main three complete the mosaic of modern day Moscow the film paints. Each is a composite of stereotypes -a foreign multi national executive, two senators (the three living similar hedonistic lifestyles), young people with aspiring consumer driven dreams; all but the "Asian Russians" quite capitalistic. While not revealing any particularly novelty, the film is interesting to Westerners as a glossy display of Moscow life, with the stereotypes we read about in the press, and hear about in World News, brought to life on screen. The basic plot however confirms (at least to me) that Moscow is not yet that up to date and permissive. The main relationship formed is a compromise with the conservative reality of Russian morals, and I think not very realistic in any society. One may infer from this film that progressive trendy Muscovites can accept bikotuuality, but not real homokotuuality. This film makes it clear that its OK to be gay if youre really bikotuual. At least, thats a start for this conservative society. But it is not what (I believe) most of the films target audiences are expecting to see. In the end, the message the film sends is a cop out. I proclaim that, from the day this film was released on, Turkish cinema exists! Monumental acting (Kenan İmirzalıoğlu, first time in his decade old career, is an actor in this one, and perfectly so), consistent storyline with all taboos hitherto nigh untouchable (corrupt Police, state relations of organized crime, torture and humiliation in prison and under custody etc.) turned upside down in a gentle and natural way not over-pressing things in a fist waving manner, a very well done final scene in which you swing between tears and laughter and overall bright regie... No Shakespearean heroes/villains cliché of Turkish films/TV; crafty and in depth character building and realization with an antagonist whom you almost pity. Decepcion and secrecy seems to be the root of the burden Jonathan is carrying in his troubled soul. During the course of a few hours he will have to face the truth about himself as his past comes back to haunt him in ways he didnt realize it would affect him. Amy Fox has opened up her play by writing a wonderful screen treatment that Chris Terrio, the young and multi talented director presents for us with great panache. Ms. Fox created strong characters that come alive in the film. We are taken to some of Manhattans rooftops and terraces to get a first rate account of people trying to deal with real problems. A point the film is trying to make is about how well do we know people close to us, even those we think we are in love with. At the center of the movie is Elizabeth, who is living with Jonathan. They are planning to get married. Elizabeth is a talented photographer who is a free lancer. Jonathan is Jewish, but she is not; he wants her to go to see the Rabbi who is going to marry them. Its clear they are not at the same wave length, and not because they come from different religious backgrounds. Diane, Elizabeths mother, is a much admired actress in the New York stage. She has an eye for spotting handsome young men, as its the case when she auditions Alec, a young actor that wants to be in a play she is going to direct. Its clear she likes him for other non acting role as well. Diane and her present husband are married for appearances sake, as we get to see him in action with another woman. "Heights" makes an interesting point in showing how inter connected all these characters are and how a small, innocent incident, will unravel things as Elizabeth gets to see first hand how wrong she has been about the man she is going to marry. Glenn Close, as Diana, makes an amazing appearance in the film. She is such an elegant performer that knows well what makes Diana act the way she does. She is not a diva, on the contrary, she seems to be a grounded woman whose love for her daughter is clear. Elizabeth Banks is wonderful as Dianas daughter, Isabel. The surprise of the film came via George Segal, who as Rabbi Mendel, clearly sees whats troubling Jonathan. Mr. Segal is a welcome sight in the film after being absent so long. James Marsden, Jesse Bradford, Rufus Wainwright, Eric Bogosian, Michael Murphy and a lot of New York based stage actors are seen in minor, but effective roles. This film clearly demonstrates the talent of Chris Terrio bringing all these actors together to do ensemble work. Mr. Terrio is lucky to be working with Jim Denault who has photographed the film with such an elegant style. Also the music by Ben Butler and Martin Erskine enhances the film.

"Ma Vie en Rose" is "the age-old story of sidelong glances, disapproving neighbors, gossip, and being ashamed of what is different," says first-time feature director Alain Berliner. Played with an even-keeled, matter-of-fact charm by newcomer George du Fresne, Ludovic is a boy who knows he is a girl and puts his trust in God that this error in his given gender will be righted. Full of hope and raised on fairytales, he believes that a supernatural force will make his dearest wish come true to be back in the body of the girl that he is meant to be. When Ludovic says, "Im a boy now but one day Ill be a girl," it makes perfect sense to him. Its like saying, "One day Ill be a grown up." Says Berliner, "The movies often treat kotuual identity as comedy material. With Ma Vie en Rose, I wanted the childs innocence and his amazing certainty make his questions touch our hearts and allow us to understand them. There is a lot to laugh about in the film, but there is also a good dose of drama." In todays world, popular culture has reflected a change in society where, as Berliner puts it, "the gender cards are being re-dealt." But even as boundaries blur, and more difference is becoming acceptable and even celebrated, particularly in popular culture, the pitfalls of kotuual identity for the individual -- and for children in particular -- are still deep. Says Berliner, "To my knowledge, no one has covered this topic at this age before, the age when the question of kotuual identity appears." But Berliner is also quick to point out that his film is not meant to come down on one side of what is right or wrong for all children. "In making the film, we were not concerned with Ludovics future. Maybe the episode described in the film will lead to something, maybe nothing." Instead, Berliner, writer Chris vander Stappen and producer Carole Scotta set out to examine how having a child who is different can effect the parents, the neighbors and the entire community in which they live. "For the parents, it takes real courage to accept their childs difference because what terrifies them most -- and terrifies just about everyone -- is the prospect of being different themselves, of being seen as different by other people. Neighbors," observes Berliner, himself a father of two, "are like so many mirrors when one of them reflects a distorting picture, you do your utmost to throw it out." To keep the tone of the story he was telling on track, and in working with actors Michele Laroque and Jean-Philippe Ecoffey, who play the mother and father, Berliner reminded himself of one thing "I never stopped telling myself that if something like this happened to me, I wouldnt know how to react." Hailed as the triumphant return of Hector Babenco, you may be forgiven for asking, "Who he?" As the Brazilian director of Kiss Of The Spider Woman and Ironweed in the Eighties, he became the breath that freshened the air of Hollywood - briefly. Now, he re-emerges on home ground with an epic prison movie, based on Drauzio Varellas experience as the sole medical officer at the notorious Carandiru jail in Sao Paolo, before it was demolished after riots. Copy picture The recreation of life behind bars for murderers and drug dealers is depicted with astonishing energy and style. The performances are uniformly good, while, at times, shaking the foundations with unrestrained verocity. Unlike another Brazilian street movie, City Of God, there exists at its core an underlying sentimentality. The prison has an organic life. Inmates look after each other and administer rough justice for acts of violence that are deemed to have broken a code of honour. The guards stay back and allow the rule of law - convict law - to keep the pressure of confinement from blowing the roof off. There is a flexibility, based on acceptance, between governor and governed, respecting the rights of each and the other, while recognising their shared humanity. Babenco focuses on a handful of prisoners. With the use of flashbacks, their lives and crimes are superficially investigated, while the doctor (Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos), who performs the role of educator and Everyman, remains in the neutral zone. A rich mans morality is wasted on the hardcore; killing seems easier than sleep. Carandiru is another country, with its own idiosyncrasies. Cliches are noticable by their absence, although the lags are surprisingly well equipped with human qualities and the degree of self-expression allowed by the prison staff reflects Christian decency on a scale hitherto unimaginable. Babenco conveys the big picture, including the vicious suppression of dissent, deemed worthy of riot status, extremely well. Its on the personal level that a softening occurs, as if pain as raw as this needs to be diluted to make it palatable for public consumption. Juste une question damour is a small film made for French TV that is one of the most sensitive, unbiased examinations of how the coming out of gay men impacts not only the one who bravely steps forward but also his friends both male and female and his family. So often films such as this fall under the title Queer Cinema and that is as unfair to the audience as it is to the writer and director of the film. This film is meant for the general public and should it receive higher profile in publicity, many longstanding prejudices would at least have the chance to be questioned by both gays and straights. Laurent (Cyrille Thouvenin) lives with his parents Jeanne (Danièle Denie) and Pierre (Idwig Stephane) behind the family Pharmacy. Laurent is secretly gay though he lives with his best girlfriend Carole (Caroline Veyt) who adores him and wholly accepts his kotuuality and is content to serve as a front for Laurents closeted role with his parents. He is not doing well studying agriculture, primarily due to the fact the his close cousin Marc died recently and had been disowned by his aunt and uncle when he announced he was gay. Laurent can only see that he must keep his secret so that his parents (whom he loves deeply) will not be injured by his admitting his kotuuality. His marks in school are so poor that he is instructed to do an internship in field agriculture to raise his academic standing. His assigned tutor is Cédric (Stéphan Guérin-Tillié) who lives an openly gay life with his warmly understanding and loving mother Emma (Eva Darlan) in an idyllic garden setting that also serves as Cédrics agricultural research lab. Though instantly attracted to each other, Laurent maintains his closeted life until Cédric reveals his affection the two become happy, passionate lovers. All goes well until Cédric insists that Laurent be in an open relationship, a state that would demand that Laurent inform his parents of his preferences. Laurent, fearful that his parents would disown him as his cousin was treated, flees and it is only after Cédrics mother Emma, a woman who loves the fact that her son is in a healthy relationship and longs for Laurent to allow his parents to love him for who truly he is, takes it upon herself to confront Laurents parents with the truth. The manner in which this initial trauma affects each of the characters forms the platform for the resolution of the story. This is a brave film, very intelligent and sensitive and informative, and is made all the better by the excellent cast. Each actor gives characterizations that are completely credible and three-dimensional none of the too familiar stereotypes are here. It is to the credit of director Christian Faure and his co-writer Annick Larboulette that JUST A QUESTION OF LOVE succeeds on every level. This is one of the most quietly powerful stories about same kotu challenges to be addressed on the screen. Highly Recommended for ALL audiences. In French with English subtitles. "The Dying Gaul" feels like an updated "Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" set in Hollywood instead of academia. But it gradually veers towards "Fatal Attraction" as the opening jabs at commercial film-making, with lots of name and title dropping that seem to be writer Craig Lucass revenge on compromises he made for his successful "Prelude to a Kiss," give way to catastrophic psychological manipulation. The initial Hollywood commentary is emphasized through the settings, as the movie producer, Campbell Scott, and his ex-writer/liberal activist/household and children manager wife, Patricia Clarkson, live in an extraordinary house with a rippling pool and ocean view. Their financial success is wielded like a weapon as the camera restlessly swoops around all their possessions, household help and scenic property. The emotional price hes paid for this is clear as Scotts "Jeffrey" could be in "Glengarry Glen Ross" (to drop film titles like he does) as hell clearly do anything to seal a deal. Peter Sarsgaard drives on to the studio lot and into their lives with a completely different character from his four other released films this year, with inflections and body language that only occasionally get a bit too flamboyant as affectations of an out gay writer discussing issues of kotuuality in the movies and his late lover. His grief and need for human warmth is so palpable that it is even believable that after failing with psychological counseling and Buddhism to deal with it, he clutches at what used to be called spiritualism, here delivered through the internet, shown visually both in the written word and the actors talking to the camera like reading aloud from their computer screens, edited effectively in the best key scenes with real life. Clarkson is wonderful as she morphs from busy housewife lounging in a fetching bikini, to curious dabbler in the dark side, to woman scorned and revengeful manipulator. She may be the Ultimate Scary Mother, kotuy, maternal and controlling, who while distraught over violent video games goes after the psyche. Unusually for how such a triangle has been portrayed in films (and the film is specifically set in 1995 as perhaps a more innocent time), we also get brief, sympathetic insight on another woman similarly affected by the writers selfish actions that puts Clarksons "Elaine" in perspective as she could have been portrayed as more of a brittle harpy. But each character alternately attracts and repels us. In his directing debut Lucas does not well serve his own script, adapted from his play, as it could have been a lot tauter in exploring the slippery slope of ethics in human relationships, that all it takes is that one small step to deceive or keep secrets before one falls into the well. There could have been a lot fewer arty scenes in silhouette, at sunset, across water. The Steve Reich music throughout becomes more irritating than tension-inducing. While the title has something to do with the writers long monologue about the significance of the Roman sculpture as an artists way to make victims sympathetic, one is left here more with the feeling that these three folks deserve each other, though the collateral damage left in their wake is a tragedy. Rising even higher than the greatest expectations engendered by the International Press when it became a favorite of the film festivals, BEAUTIFUL BOXER is one of the more poetic, sensitive, luxuriously vivid and colorful films to come out of Thailand - and that is saying a lot, given the extravagant epics that yearly grow in popularity. This work of art is simply stunning in content, in direction, in acting, and in heartfelt simplicity of message. This is a great one! Writer/director Ekachai Uekrongtham based his first film on the true story of Parinaya Charoemphol AKA Nong Toom, a famous Thai athlete Muay Thai boxer (better known as kick boxer - a demanding, dangerous sport) who entered the world of Muay Thai to garner enough money to help his family and pay for his ultimate kotu-change surgery. A tough story to offer general audiences, perhaps, but Ekachai Uekrongtham presents this edgy biography with such cinematic finesse and care that it becomes a film that should appeal to a very wide audience. And much of that success is due to the towering performance by Asanee Suwan in his acting debut Suwan is in life a professional kick boxer who won the title role after extensive auditions by many practitioners of Muay Thai. BEAUTIFUL BOXER takes us through the life of Nong Toom, his childhood in a family of loving accepting parents who respect his love of beauty and things feminine, his brief period of being a monk who must leave the monastery because of his inclinations, through his introduction to makeup and play-acting womens roles in the Thai theaters, his ridicule as being more girl than boy (a fact that results in his parents incarceration!), and his devoted friendship with a girl who supports his desire for femininity and a young man who stands up for him in the boys camp for learning sports. Gradually Nong Toom realizes that the only way he can make enough money to achieve a kotu change operation is to become a successful kick boxer and he aligns himself with a trainer Pi Chart (Sorapong Chatree) and with much commitment and practice becomes Thailands most famous Muay Thai. His self-respect is further established when he openly wears makeup in the boxing ring, causing many to believe his act is a gimmick and not the manifestation of his true transkotuualism. He fights the toughest opponents and wins consistently until he at last arrives in Toyko for the big purse of fighting female wrestler Kyoko Inoue (who plays herself). With the money from the fight he is able to have his surgery and becomes the famous actress and model now living in Bangkok. Under less sensitive eyes and minds this story could have become audacious, but instead the film elects to be sensitive to the transkotuual conviction that Nong Toom is a woman trapped in a mans body, and it is the journey of self acceptance and personal victory that makes the story so deeply touching. Asanee Suwan, as a fine athlete, does all of his own fighting in the film and it is more choreography than brutality. He is amazing to watch and coupled with the fact that he is so wholly convincing in his fine acting that he makes this young transkotuual utterly credible in movement, emotional density, and purity of vision is an extraordinary achievement. Yes, the film has a few flaws of editing and other minor aspects, but the overwhelming power of the story more than compensates for those first film learning curves. Highly recommended for ALL audiences, especially for those who fear there will be gratuitous physical scenes that might offend. There are none!
